Who Have You Spent Time With Today?

Hey everyone!

Here’s a question that I’ve thought about on a number of occasion?  Who have you spent time with today?  When asked that question, a mind automatically mentally back-tracks over the different people we have had interaction with that day?

It is a biblical truth that “Bad company corrupts good character.” (1 Corinthians 15:33) That being true, then “Good company” should encourage and affirm good character, and even help to curve bad character.

So did you think of all the people you spent time with today?  But I have a question for you…

Did you consider the books you read?  What about the music you listened to?  The movies you watch? In essence, you are “spending time” with the authors/creators of those books, songs and movies when you are reading and listening to them.  Whether you agree with them or not, you are spending time with these people-their perspectives, their stories, their values, their hearts and their lives! What is it about bad-people company that corrupts good character?  Would it not be those very same things??

So I ask you again?  Who have you spent time with today?

I remember a few weeks ago, I was thinking on this very same thought.  As I recollected my day, I mused that I had spent time with the God of th universe that day, John C. Maxwell, Dr. Don Colbert, and my family.  Definitely all days don’t look like this for me, nor should they (We need to be regularly taking time to pour into others as well), but this day was a day where I was enlightened and expanded because of the people I chose to spend my time with.

Choose wisely, who you spend time with today, whether it be people or different forms of media. Understand that each of these influences are helping to shape and to mold the person you are to become.

  1. I’m not sure that bad company corrupts good character, although, certainly in some situations this is true.

According to some people Jesus had bad character because of the bad company he was with. “When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, ‘Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?’” (Mt. 9:11).

I think it’s true that, when it comes to the formation of your thoughts, “bad company corrupts good character.” However, I don’t think that this is necessarily true when it comes to choosing whom you’ll associate with.

Jesus came for the sinners. It’s the sick who need a Doctor. So that’s a very good question: “Who have you spent time with today?”

    Grace and peace.

  2. Very good point John. That elaborates a bit on the point I was making that not every day looks like this and that it is important to be pouring our lives into people as well. In this post though, I decided just to touch on one aspect as opposed to covering the whole spectrum.

More so, this post was to get people thinking about the influences they are allowing in their lives through media sources. When it comes to associating with people, it really comes down to who is influencing who. If a person of good character through associating is drawing peopole up, then it is a healthy relationship. If the person with good character finds they are being influenced towards compromise of their values, rather than being an influence, they need to re-evaluate their association.

Thanks for commenting and adding to the spectrum!

  3. Yes that’s a good distinction you make. “w!ho is influencing who?” I like that, great stuff!

  4. Great post bro… love ya

  5. Powerful truth Joel! One that I agree with.

  6. in Life we turn to take Life light rather askingourselves the very same question you ask”Who have you spent time with today”. we turn to cloud our minds instead of opening up and exploring our potential. i’m very touched and inspired by your thinking. God Bless You
